In Michigan we get a significant amount of snowfall through the winter. Clearing the snow when I have 3500 square feet of drive and walk ways is difficult and time consuming after a few inches of snow. I have used shovels, gas snow blowers, and a blade on my tractor to get things done as quickly and safely as possible. I know that small gas engines are bad polluters even when properly tuned and well maintained so I recently purchased an electric snow blower so see how it would work an my home.
There are a couple nice things about electric snow throwers- they are quiet and use power that comes from power plants that are strictly regulated to reduce pollution. Pound per pound electric snow blowers have a lot more power than their gas powered counterparts. You do need a heavy extension cord and need to be aware of the cord at all times while using the snow blower.
I was very impressed with how well the snow thrower worked on a few inches of snow. I was even more impressed with how well it moved a larger compacted drift of snow and threw it 30 plus feet away. I would highly recommend anyone to get one who has a typical city home with a modest lot.
The only issue is that it has a small clearing path so with my driveway it is not practical for regular use. I will use the electric snow blower when I have the extra time to spend clearing and in the parking area where my trailer and landscaping truck spends the winter. I will also have it as my loaner for my neighbors that only need to use one a few times a year in the tool cooperative I am starting.
All in all I think electric snow throwers are a great solution for many snow bound homeowners.
