I like the Autumn and the cooler crisp temperatures it brings. The 50's and 60's are perfect for many outdoor activities, yard work, and long walks in the woods while the leaves change color. The cooler temperatures also is a reminder to button up, seal up, and get the home ready for a cold winter.
First- I make sure the furnace is clean and running properly. Since I do not have central air the furnace has been dormant for about six months and needs to be inspected and cleaned. New filter, vacuum the vents, service the humidifier, and a general inspection to make sure there are no obvious issues.
I take this opportunity to wash the windows, replace any cracked glass, re-glaze and caulk where needed. I have storm windows so I need to make sure they work and seal properly and take the screens down. Wow- look at the fall colors!
I also take the time to check the door seals and screen door operation. I will caulk gaps and adjust the door to make sure they operate smoothly and close tightly.
Most of these chores are fairly obvious, there is more to do though. An attic access door can be like leaving a window open if it is not sealed properly. Most access panels and pull down stairs do not seal at all. Being in the ceiling of the upper level means that heat will egress through there at a high rate. Sealing air leaks is first followed by insulating the access space.
A panel can have a foam or rubber seal placed around it perimeter and then add insulation to match the R value of the rest of the attic.
Access stairs are not so easy. Stairs can be convenient as another place to store things that are not used often but they are very difficult to seal. The best way I have found is to make a second panel above the stairs that does seal tightly and then ad the proper amount of insulation.
Now is the time to get these projects done- before it gets too cold and difficult to work outside. A little effort now while the weather is nice can make a more comfortable and energy efficient home.
